John was a pioneer at the Franchise Development Centre, part of a Singapore government statutory board in the early 1990s. He subsequently joined Ernst & Young’s consulting practice. His hands-on experience in franchising can be traced back to the mid-1990s when he rolled out and managed a retail franchise with over 300 outlets in China.
John took over the helm of FT Consulting in 1998 and has been serving as an Executive Committee Member of the Franchising and Licensing Association (FLA) Singapore since 2000. For 16 years, he was the Chief Trainer of the Association’s Fundamentals of Franchise Management course, having trained close to 1,000 franchise owners and senior executives in Singapore and the region. John currently also provides branding training under Singapore Management University’s PCP programme.
Between 2001 and 2011, John was concurrently the Managing Director of Ya Kun International, an F&B business with a regional network spanning 6 countries during that period. On the branding front, John was formerly a member of the Singapore Prestige Brand Award (SPBA) Organising Committee and had also spoken on the subject of branding in many public forums.
Besides franchise development and branding, John’s consulting experience also includes technology licensing, strategic planning, IP management and Business Excellence (BE). He has consulted for a wide range of industries including food & beverage, hospitality, health & beauty, fashion, education, automotive services, IT, marine engineering, industrial park management as well as logistics.
Franchising in the Global Market
At the HIA2020 event, John will share how local companies can grow and go global by leveraging on the principles of franchising, as well as highlight pitfalls to look out for. He will cite examples of companies (some with halal offerings) that have embarked on this strategy, covering their journey and their success.
